The weight age of this session is 2-3 questions,
having a flair knowledge at least 10th class level may help you in this
area
Prelims (Paper- II) Civil
Service Aptitude Test (CSAT)
This paper is introduced from the year
2011 onwards; mainly it is intended to check candidate IQ levels for those
who are appearing for the UPSC examination. And it can classified as
the following seven modules
1.) Comprehension
Out of 80 questions more than 40-50% questions comes
from this section only (nearly 30-40 questions)
2.) English Language
comprehension skills
Under this the comprehension is given only in
English language. As English being lingua franca of the country should be known
to officers in civil services. Many official documents that he need to deal or
composed in English so must have the capabilities to understand
and comprehend it (The question has its weigh age nearly 5-6
questions)
(NOTE: And it is the session that has contradictions
and many issues as you see regularly in news and news papers)
In the year 2014 UPSC given a less importance at
this area as this session)
3.) Decision making
and problems solving skills
In this area the candidate is given a question
and 4 options that are nearly correlated related to the
question. The candidate need to choose to the best that suits in that context
based on given set of conditions and information in the question. This is to
evaluate the candidate ability to make decision at a given context
(NOTE: But when we observe the questions in 2014 the
UPSC has changed its attention, even 1 question has not been asked in
this session)
4.) GMA (general
mental ability)
This session checks the candidate mathematical
skills and mental abilities Verbal and non verbal reasoning areas are the
famous areas. For this my recommendation is R.S Aagarwal Of Reasoning And Non -Reasoning see
the question paper of 2014 some questions related to verbal reasoning are the
direct questions from this book. Check yourself if you can
If you observe the last 10 year papers, Questions are generally from
- Veen diagrams
- Sets
- Dices
- Direction
- Diagrammatic sequences
- Coding and decoding
- Ages and relations
- Etc
5.) Logical reasoning
and analytical ability
- Syllogisms
- Assertion-reason-conclusion
Type questions, but the bad thing is that there is
no question at least one to two in 2014 which has got good weight age in the
previous years
6.) Basic numeracy
This is one of favorite session; data is given in
the form of graphs, tables and table reading, quantitative analysis, Much
more practice is required to get over this session and this is the area which
consumed my time in 2014 attempt, Try to practice the one question in
different perceptive form like (table, bar chat, table form etc) You need to
get a grip over this area and its weigh age is also more
7.) Interpersonal
skills and communication skills
No questions in this area from last three years
interpersonal skills are tested in the interview, where the candidate is tested
for language skills, Listening and comprehending, speaking and personnel traits
of the candidate
NOTE: And the favorite are most of the areas
that need to cover 1st are the following sessions
- Comprehension and English comprehension
- GMA (verbal and non verbal Reasoning)
- Basic Numeracy
These three areas almost cover more than 60 percent
of the paper 2.
