Parliament of India



According to Article 79 there shall be a parliament for the union which shall consists of the president and the two houses namely

  1.  Lower House and Upper House constitutes the parliament of India
  2. The council of States (Rajya Sabha) and
  3. House of the People (Lok Sabha)
  4. President
  5. Sessions of Parliament

Parliament of India

1.) The Council of States (Rajya sabha)
The Head or the Officer of this house is Vice - President (Ex- office Chairman)
In his absence the Deputy Chairman (Person elected from Rajya Sabha Only) can take the Proceedings of the house
Strength of the Rajya Sabha: According to constitution the maximum strength of the constitution shall not exceed 250 Members (238 + 12 members nominated by the president), however as per Vajpayee Government and subsequent act passed by the parliament in 2001, the strength of Rajya Sabha has been fixed to 245 members (12 members nominated) till the year 2025

2.) House of People (Lok Sabha)
The head or the officer of the house is the Speaker (Elected from among the members of Lok Sabha), In his absence the deputy speaker takes the proceedings of the house
Strength of Lok Sabha:  According to constitution the maximum strength of the constitution shall not exceed 552 Members (530 (States) members nominated + 20 (Union territories) + 2 Nominated by president), however as per Vajpayee Government and subsequent act passed by the parliament in 2001, the strength of Rajya Sabha has been fixed to 545 members (530 (States) members nominated + 13 (Union territories) + 2 Nominated by president) till the year 2025

3.) President
Although the president is not the member of either house of the parliament he is the integral part of the parliament and performs several functions related to proceedings of the parliament such as
  1. Summoning and proroguing of the houses
  2. Dissolving the Lok Sabha (Note : Rajya Sabha Can’t be dissolved)
  3. Giving Prior Recommendations to certain bills
  4. No bill an become law without out his assent

4.) Sessions of Parliament
According to the constitution In the parliament proceedings their shall not be a gap of 6months with two consecutive sittings of the parliament
However as per our parliamentary practice there are three sessions of parliament in the year
  1. Budget Sessions (between February to May) – This is the Longest and most important session)
  2. Monsoon Session (Between July to August)
  3. Winter session (November to December) – This is the Shortest Session
